Back in the summer of 2024, Pace were commissioned by Elim Homes to create a vibrant, hand-painted mural at Hathaway House, a student accommodation located in Kingsdown, Bristol. To bring this vision to life, we were excited to team up with Bristol-based signwriter Tozer Signs, combining our expertise to transform the space.

This mural was thoughtfully designed to celebrate the local area, its rich history, and the diverse community that calls the city home.

The artwork features the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge and the famous hot air balloons that the city is known for, alongside the word “Welcome” in several of the languages spoken throughout Bristol. This not only highlights the city’s cultural heritage but also reflects the diversity that defines the area.

One of the key objectives of this project was to create a piece of public art that would bring lasting value to the space.

In addition to enhancing the aesthetics of Hathaway House, the mural was carefully designed to help combat tagging, providing a meaningful alternative to the graffiti that often appears in the area.

By adding a unique and visually appealing artwork that connects with both the local environment and community, we aimed to create a lasting impact that goes beyond just looking good – it’s about creating something that people can connect with.

A heartwarming moment came from an 83-year-old lady who has lived in the buildings directly opposite her whole life. She shared that the mural had brightened up the area so much and expressed her deep gratitude.

At Pace, we are committed to delivering high-quality, hand-painted murals and signage that are both visually striking and durable.

This project at Hathaway House is a perfect example of how public art can transform spaces, fostering a sense of pride and contributing to the identity of a place.

We’re incredibly proud to have been a part of this project and are pleased to see how the mural continues to brighten the space and lift the spirits of the residents and local community.

The commissioned mural has revitalised our student accommodation in central Bristol. It beautifully showcases the diversity of our residents and the variety of languages spoken in the city, receiving praise from both the residents and the wider local community. The iconic imagery of Bristol adds a sense of belonging and ties in seamlessly with the surroundings. We are thrilled that a previously dull building has been transformed into a vibrant, colourful space, while also serving as a deterrent against tagging.
